What would you do when someone threatens to destroy you? It would be inconceivable to expect you to smile to the threats and counter propose providing arms concession to him so as to appease him. Sounds illogical but that is exactly what we are witnessing in the US-Iran “deal” that is in the making. “Iran’s Supreme leader Ali Khamenei called for ‘Death to America’ on Saturday, a day after President Barack Obama appealed to Iran to seize a “historic opportunity” for a nuclear deal and a better future, and as US Secretary of State John Kerry claimed substantial progress toward an accord.” – Business Insider.
It is getting impossible to understand perplexing world politics, particularly foreign policies emanating out of the White House. For years, US had been drumming the dangers of Iran having nuclear weapons and had threatened to destroy such efforts to contain Iran’s becoming a nuclear-armed country. Suddenly, the winds have changed towards appeasement. Is Iran becoming less a threat as the US had maintained or has it become too much a threat that threats won’t work anymore?
Middle East politics must necessarily include Israel, the nexus of Middle East politics and tensions. The White House change of stance coincided with the re-election of Netanyahu as Israel’s next leader. Against all odds, Netanyahu scored another success, much to the disdain of Obama. Obama and Netanyahu had never been on “friendly” terms since Obama took office. Perhaps Obama had been confident that Netanyahu will lose the election and therefore came forth with the appeasement policy. With Netanyahu back in office, this may emerge as another serious US-Israel contention.
Has Israel the right to assert that Iran must not be allowed to be nuclear-armed? Iran deems Israel has no right to exist and had never ceased to show its desire to obliterate Israel into oblivion. As a leader of nation being threatened in this manner, Israel’s justification does not seem unreasonable. There is an element of self-defence in maintaining this position. Had Iran not make such threats, then Israel would have exceeded its political boundary in wanting to stop Iran’s nuclear ambition.
Listen to the death cries from Iran again (Times of Israel): “Death to America,” the ayatollah responded: “Of course yes, death to America, because America is the original source of this pressure.”
Ayatollah is not totally wrong to implicate USA as an original source of woes. But is the Ayatollah just doing a media prance or he thinks this is just a funny Iranian new year joke? As America’s leader, how would you have reacted to such death threats? Smile, you are on candid camera!
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
