USA Today – “President Obama has directed the Centers for Disease Control to dispatch rapid response “SWAT teams” of Ebola experts to any local hospital with an infected patient within 24 hours. … Underscoring the urgency of the crisis, Obama postponed a long-planned trip to New Jersey and Connecticut to campaign for Democrats. That decision came shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a second Dallas health care worker who has tested positive for the deadly virus had recently returned from a flight to Cleveland.”
Quarantine? Yes you do. No you don’t. If one does and another doesn’t, it is as good as doing nothing. This is no longer a world separated by mountains and oceans. The world is closely knitted by land, air and sea links. It is like the world wide web. Once a packet of data is transmitted, it will get to the destination virtually without fail. You cannot stop it.
Just imagine in China alone, 3.6 billion journeys are made over the Lunar New Year period. According to IATA, about 3.3 billion people will travel by air this year, or nine million people every day. The staggering amount of human connectivity cannot prevent transmission of viral diseases at lightning speed once it gets started.
What does all these mean if Ebola is really an incurable fatal disease, has a 21 days (different “expert” opinions) and can be transmitted by body fluid? If indeed Ebola is as dangerous as was reported, it is perhaps too late to stop the plague from escalating into a world-wide disaster. Vice-principal of Novosibirsk State University for Research, corresponding member of RAS, and Doctor of Biological Sciences, Sergei Netyosov told RIA Novosti said that “Tough measures including army deployment are needed to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus globally from the West African countries battling the disease. … the army must quarantine infected areas as if “they are guarding a rocket.”
With such dire rhetoric, US governors Cuomo and Chris Christie took the initiatives to require that all aid workers returning from West Africa be quarantined for 21 days, even if they show no sign of the disease. On the other hand, White House officials obviously do not agree with the quarantine initiatives and are “pushing the governors to dial down their mandatory quarantine rules and let the feds decide how to keep the deadly Ebola virus from spreading in the United States”, according to The Post. To further confound the confusion, the Pentagon is building isolation units to transport Ebola patients.
Not to out-do the Pentagon, UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Monday (Oct 27) praised the “selfless” efforts of health workers in Ebola-hit countries and criticised quarantine restrictions put on those returning home. The UN Chief favours humanitarian acts over safety for the rest of the world. He added: “Returning health workers who have managed to avoid infection are exceptional people who are giving to humanity. They should not be subjected to restrictions that have no scientific basis. They should not be stigmatised for their selfless service.” (Channel News Asia)
The bottom line is most aptly summed up by reading the word Ebola aloud: “You both lie“. Indeed, seems that everybody lies for reasons that are only known to them. We are no way closer to the truth about this enigmatic disease.
All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.
