Biblical records narrated how a tiny tribe of people grew from the family of Israel (Jacob) into a kingdom, as a consequence of the Abramic promise. Initially, this Israel tribe was under the direct headship of their God who liberated them from slavery in Egypt. However, Israel rejected God and moved from a theocracy into a secular democracy. After God acquiesced to their demands for a worldly king to govern them, Israel degenerated into a nation plagued with corrupt kings. What followed were epochs of peace and wars until the Babylonians conquered the kingdom under Zedekiah, the last king of Israel who ruled from 434-423 C.C. It was not until 1948 did Israel returned as a nation once again.
Israel may be seen as a micro-system of world kingdoms and nations, alternating between periods peace and wars. In the secular world, the phenomenon may be described as sequential periods of peace -> corruption -> upheavals -> wars -> humility (or resignation) -> peace. It is a cycle that corresponds to the fallen human nature and the consequential aftermath. In good times, man becomes complacent and greedy, leading to corruption and its fall. When hard times hit, man is humbled and begins the reconstruction, tolerance and yearning for peace. War cycles mimic economic cycles.
Several researchers of economic cycles and wars see the phenomenon repeating in this cyclical fashion. To them, the cycles are inevitable. Cliff Droke wrote “The created universe in which we live is manifestly governed by the principle of continuous revolution, commonly known as the cycle. Most are cognizant of the cyclic motions which govern prices in the realm of economics and finance, but few are aware of how cycles of even larger degrees connect those financial fluctuations to the extremely important human endeavors of war and peace. On this score, it is our contention that a definite and predictable cycle governing times of war and times of peace can be isolated and used to forecast times of significant socio-military and economic turmoil. Moreover, this “War and Peace cycle,” if you will, is a direct consequence of activity within the realm of gold production and trading.”
Yet, many are forecasting that we are now in a critical point in the cycle that will result in economic calamity and wars. Judging by world events and using some of these cycle theories, the world is indeed in a precarious period. Even the Pope says we are already in WW3. Chinese PLA Professor Han Xudong warned in the People’s Daily that Beijing should prepare itself for a third world war which could arise out of the conflict between the United States and Russia over Ukraine. War could very well be at our doorsteps.
2 Kings 24:20
For through the anger of the Lord it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.
